Most people buy too much internet. Not because they’re careless, but because the only people telling them what speed to get are the same people selling it.
Walk onto any provider’s website and you’ll be nudged toward 500 Mbps or a gigabit plan before you’ve said a word about your household. A family of four streaming Netflix and taking a couple of work calls gets pitched the same tier as a house with six gamers. The recommendation isn’t tailored to you. It’s tailored to the margin.
So here’s a calculator that works the other way round. Tell it what happens in your house at the busiest moment of the day everyone home, TVs on, someone on a call and it adds up the bandwidth those things actually consume. Then it tells you the cheapest plan tier that covers it, with a bit of room to spare.

How to read the result
The big number is the download tier we’d point you at. The two smaller figures are what your household genuinely needs, before rounding up to whatever plans providers happen to sell.
If there’s a gap between them — say you need 87 Mbps and we’ve recommended 100 — that’s normal. Providers don’t sell an 87 Mbps plan. You buy the next one up.
The number is deliberately set for your worst moment, not your average one. Internet feels slow at the point where everything collides: someone starts a game download while two people are on calls and the TV is running 4K. If your plan handles that, it handles everything else.
Where these numbers come from
Nothing here is guesswork. Each figure comes from what the service itself publishes as a requirement, with a 20% cushion added at the end because no connection delivers its advertised speed every second of the day.

Netflix asks for 15 Mbps for 4K. We use 25 because a single stream rarely runs alone, and because 4K bitrates spike during fast-moving scenes. The rest follow the same principle: the published minimum, plus enough slack that things don’t fall over when they overlap.
Gaming barely uses any speed at all
This one surprises people, and it costs them money.
An online match sends tiny packets back and forth — your position, your inputs, what everyone else is doing. It’s a few megabits per second at most. Competitive shooters, racing games, MMOs: all of them run fine on a connection you’d consider slow.
What ruins gaming is latency, and latency has almost nothing to do with your plan tier. It’s about the physical distance to the game server, the routing between you and it, and whether your connection type introduces delay. Satellite is bad for gaming because the signal travels to orbit and back. Fiber is excellent because it’s a short, direct path. Upgrading from 300 Mbps to gigabit on the same cable line does not reduce your ping by a single millisecond.
The one part of gaming that does eat bandwidth is downloading. Modern titles run 100 GB and up. On 100 Mbps that’s roughly two and a half hours. On gigabit it’s fifteen minutes. If waiting for downloads genuinely bothers you, that’s a fair reason to pay more. Improving your K/D ratio isn’t.
Upload is the number that catches people out
Providers advertise one number. It’s always the download figure, because it’s the bigger and more impressive one. Upload gets buried in the fine print, and for a lot of households it’s the thing that actually breaks.
Anything you send out uses upload: your camera feed on a video call, security cameras writing to the cloud around the clock, photo backups, file sharing, streaming to Twitch. A house with two people on video calls and a doorbell camera can be pushing 15 Mbps up during the working day.
Here’s the problem. Cable internet is asymmetric by design. A cable plan advertising 500 Mbps down often gives you somewhere between 10 and 35 Mbps up, and buying a faster download tier frequently doesn’t raise that ceiling at all. You can pay double and get the same upload.
Fiber is symmetric — 300 down usually means 300 up. Fixed 5G home internet varies but is generally better than cable on upload. If the calculator flags your upload need as high, that’s not telling you to buy a bigger plan. It’s telling you the type of connection matters more than the tier.
A rough guide by household
If you’d rather not touch the calculator, this is roughly where most homes land:

Gigabit makes sense for a genuinely large or unusual household. For everyone else it’s an expensive way to buy headroom you’ll never touch.
Things a faster plan won’t fix
Before you upgrade, it’s worth ruling out the causes that have nothing to do with your plan:
Your router. A router more than five or six years old can bottleneck a connection well below what you’re paying for. If you rent one from your provider, it’s often the cheapest hardware they could source.
Wi-Fi distance and walls. Speed drops sharply through plaster, brick, and concrete, and across floors. A device two rooms away might be seeing a fraction of what arrives at your router. Test with an ethernet cable to find out what you’re really getting.
Old devices. A laptop with a Wi-Fi 4 chipset can’t use a modern connection properly no matter how fast the line is.
Congestion. Cable is a shared medium. If your street is all on the same provider, evening speeds can fall well below the advertised rate. That’s a network problem, and a higher tier won’t solve it.
Your data cap. Some providers throttle after you cross a monthly threshold. Slow internet at the end of every month is a cap, not a capacity problem.
Check what you’re paying for now
Run a speed test on a device plugged in by ethernet, at a busy time of day, and compare it to what’s on your bill. Three outcomes:
If you’re getting roughly what you pay for and it’s above what the calculator says you need, you’re overpaying. Call and ask about a lower tier — providers rarely volunteer that a cheaper plan exists.
If you’re getting far less than you pay for, that’s a service issue, and a bigger plan won’t help. Push your provider on it before spending more.
If you’re getting what you pay for and it isn’t enough, upgrading is the right call. Now you know which number to upgrade — and whether download or upload is the one that matters.
For most families, yes. Four people streaming HD, one on a video call, and a few phones browsing lands around 60–80 Mbps with headroom included. 100 Mbps covers that. It gets tight if two or more of you regularly watch 4K at the same time as someone downloads a game.
Almost certainly not. Gigabit is worth paying for if you routinely move very large files, if a lot of people download at once, or if you’re on fiber and gigabit is barely more expensive than the tier below. For a typical household it’s speed that sits unused.
A single person on video calls needs about 10–15 Mbps of the download and 5 Mbps of upload. The catch is that upload figure — it’s small, but a lot of entry-level cable plans sit close to it, and adding a second person on calls doubles it.
No. Lag is latency, which depends on distance to the server and connection type, not on how many Mbps you buy. A wired connection on a modest fiber plan beats a gigabit satellite link every time.

Because cable networks are built that way. The infrastructure allocates far more capacity to download than upload, and paying for a faster download tier usually doesn’t change it. Fiber gives you matching speeds in both directions.
